Outline of Play
Compared to her dead mother, Catherine Sloper seems dull and lifeless and years of her father’s thinly veiled contempt have accenuated her lack of confidence.
She is thus easy prey for a fortune hunter like Morris Townsend and responds to his advances with joy and complete trust.
Even Dr. Sloper’s threat to disinherit her does not deter her from agreeing to an elopement . However, the journey from innocence to experience proves to be a painful one for Catherine.
